Search for a new Secretary General

 

SEARCH FOR A NEW SECRETARY GENERAL

 

The EACTS has the privilege to announce the election of Sir Bruce Keogh to the position of Medical Director of the UK National Health Service.  We congratulate our Secretary General for this unique career opportunity.

 

Sir Bruce Keogh, according to the EACTS Constitution, will be reducing his activities as the Secretary General, and the EACTS is searching for his successor, who will be given the opportunity to familiarize himself with his/her responsibilities as the understudy to the retiring Secretary General.

 

The Council and the Nominating Committee have agreed (according to the Constitution Article V, section 14) on the following procedure for the election of the next Secretary General:

1. Announcement of the vacancy at the General Assembly in Geneva 2007 and of the conditions of the post (this announcement) with a call for applications in the Newsletter, by blast mailing to the membership of the EACTS, and on the EACTS website.
2. The evaluation of the applications is made by an Evaluation Committee.  This Committee consists of the executive officers of the EACTS (President, Vice-President, Secretary General, Treasurer, Information Officer and the Editor) and the Nominating Committee. This Committee is chaired by the Chairman of the Nominating Committee. 
3. The nomination is made by the Nominating Committee.
4. The confirmation is made by an affirmative vote of a majority of the Members at the General Assembly.

 

 

Responsibilities of the Office

 

The Secretary General is one of the Officers of the Association and ex-officio member of the Council and of the Executive Committee of the Association.

The Secretary General is elected for three years and may be re-elected twice.

The Secretary General carries the main responsibility for the administrative activities of the Council and the Association.  He is charged with keeping the minutes from all Council meetings, and guarantees their execution. He oversees and directs the organisational secretariats in Windsor and Umea.

The Secretary General engages members to work for the Association in the different committees and resource groups.

The Secretary General has access to financial resources covering his expenses in the execution of his office.

The Secretary General is the liaison officer for all activity within the Association and for all contacts with other professional organisations or health authorities. He is, together with the President and other Officers of the Association, the main representative of the Association.

The President is the foremost member and spokesman of the Council. The Secretary General serves the Presidents by knowledge about the tradition and routines of the Association, by appropriate administrative assistance to the President and by preparing the meeting agendas under President's guidance. 

 

 

Credentials of a possible candidate


Essential attributes

-         Must be an active member of the Association (defined in the Constitution under Article IV, section 3) as having a practice entirely or substantially concerned with cardio-thoracic surgery and have fulfilled the membership requirements.

-          The clinical practice can be either cardiac, cardio-thoracic or thoracic surgery.

-          Proof of organisational and administrative skills.

-          A scientific background reflected in a PhD or doctoral level degree, and a well-established publication list.

-          Previous experience as a member of EACTS Council or any committee or resource group.

-          Proficiency in the English language.

-          Willing to devote time (including regular travel) to the Association.

 

Desirable attributes

-          Thorough knowledge and extensive use of modern information technology.

-          A formal business education.

·          Details of administrative and organisational experience

·          Details of previous or present position in a medical association

·          Applicant's ideas and objectives including timeline about further development of the EACTS.

Any member may also suggest another member as the next Secretary General. Such a suggestion should be sent to the address below in the month after the announcement of the vacancy on the www.eacts.org. Upon such a proposal, the present President will write to the suggested member informing him about the proposal.
