Dear ColleagueWe have been eagerly anticipating the 13th Annual Meeting of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, which comes to Glasgow at a pivotal time in Scottish political life - the introduction of the first Scottish Parliament in nearly three hundred years, a time of reflection as we near the turn of the century, and a time when our Specialty can look back on 50 years of spectacular progress.
We have a superb scientific programme to reflect this progress and to show the way forward, preceded by a postgraduate educational programme to update and inform. Our industrial colleagues participating in the trade exhibition have increased in numbers, and together with the excellent schedule of satellite meetings, will ensure the largest meeting in our Association's 13 year history. The high standard of the selected Abstracts points to a corresponding level of quality.
In addition to the scientific and educational experience, I hope that you will venture forth to savour some of the hospitality and culture of Scotland during your visit. In keeping with EACTS traditions, our social programme is designed to bring participants together and give some insight into Scotland's heritage. For all of you, may this be a rewarding professional experience, and a memorable encounter with Scotland's people, traditions and landscapes.
David J Wheatley
President of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, and
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee
