European School for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery
EDUCATION AT THE SCHOOL
A
complement to departmental education
The ESCTS has the ambition to give comprehensive overviews
of subjects. It provides opportunities for surgeons-in-training
to enter into high levels of discussion with the best teachers and to become
acquainted with them.
How
are the Courses arranged?
The education is arranged in one-week-courses from Monday
until Saturday afternoon. Teaching hours are from 08:30 18:00 all days
except Wednesday when students are free in the afternoon. Successive courses
will be given over 3 years in cardiac as well as in thoracic surgery. Courses
on all 3 levels will be given each year. Additional courses will be arranged
according to demand.
Computers,
Internet connections and a library will be available. Attendants are to
prepare themselves by reading recommended literature
and recent journal articles related to the topics to be presented and
discussed.
Each
week will close with a written examination with a personal feedback from the
course organisers. The examination is voluntary and anonymous.
The
official language of the School is English. All teaching will be in English.
Who
can attend?
You
are eligible to apply for the courses if you have the intention of becoming a
cardio/thoracic surgeon and are working as a surgeon-in-training at a Cardio/Thoracic
Department. Each course will consist of maximum 25 participants. They will
come primarily from Europe but non-Europeans are welcome to apply as well.
Experienced lecturers from all parts of Europe will present a systematic
overview of topics, using advanced teaching techniques. There will be ample
time for in-depth discussions and personal contacts. Apart from lectures,
discussions and movies, there will also be some evening chats on various
topics, medical and non-medical.
