THE EUROPEAN BOARD OF THORACIC AND CARDIOVASCULAR SURGEONS

The European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons was founded in 1996. Its main task is to arrange examinations and issue fellowships to those passing the examination. A pre-requisite for passing the examination is to have passed the national specialty requirements. It is now a structure within the UEMS (Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes or European Union of Medical Specialists), which is the EU organisation for the medical specialities.

Examinations take place at least once a year, usually in conjunction with the main meetings of the speciality. It consists both of a theoretical part as well as a part dealing with patient cases.
