APPLYING FOR MEMBERSHIP OF EACTS
Please read this carefully before completing the application form.
EACTS was founded as a European organisation. However, its membership is now spread all over the world in all continents representing some 80 countries. Since its foundation in 1986 more than 2000 members have been admitted.
Membership Categories
EACTS has five membership categories
| Active | Surgeons whose practice is entirely or substantially concerned with cardio-thoracic surgery and have fulfilled the Membership requirements |
| Associate | Scientists, perfusionists and members of the professions allied to medicine who made major contribution to the field of cardio-thoracic surgery, but themselves do not actively practice surgery |
| Trainee | Surgeons in training in cardiac and/or thoracic surgery. Trainee Membership cannot be held for more than five years and applicants are obliged to state the expected date when specialty training will be completed. |
| Senior | Active Members reaching the age of 65 years (or who retire from active practice at an earlier age) shall automatically become a Senior Member |
| Honorary | Council with the concurrence of the Association can offer Honorary Membership to such distinguished persons as may be deemed worthy of this honour |

How to apply for EACTS membership
Requirements Active Membership:
- Completed Application Form
- A copy of National Board Certificate
- Provide reference in English to one publication in a journal quoted in the Index Medicus.
- Support of three Active, Honorary or Senior members by signature on the Application Form
Requirements Trainee Membership
- Completed Application Form
- Support of three Active, Honorary or Senior members by signature on the Application Form
Trainee Membership cannot be held for more than five years and applicants are obliged to state the expected date when specialty training will be completed.
What happens when training is complete?
Trainee Members of EACTS who have completed training and are now acting as an independent operating surgeon, can apply for Active membership by filling in the relevant section of the Application Form.
Requirements Trainee Members applying for Active membership
- Completed Application Form
- A copy of National Board Certificate
- Provide reference in English of one of your plubcations which is quoted in the Index Medicus.
- Letter from Head of Department, or person responsible for the training programme, stating that the applicant is practicing cardio-thoracic surgery
Associate Membership:
This category is open to scientists, perfusionists and members of the professions allied to medicine who made major contribution to the field of cardio-thoracic surgery, but themselves do not actively practice surgery.
Requirements for Associate Membership (Scientists)
- Completed Application Form
- Support of three Active, Honorary or Senior members by signature on the Application Form
Requirements for Associate Membership (Perfusionists)
- Completed Application Form
Perfusionists, who have taken the examination of the European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, EBCP, are welcome to apply for Associate membership of the EACTS. Officers of the EBCP and EACTS will consider and approve the applications. Applicants do not need to arrange supporting signatures. The EACTS Executive Secretariat will forward this application for signatures of two official representatives of the European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and signature of one official representative of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. The EACTS Membership Committee will be presented with the names of new applicants and formal approval of applications will take place at the next meeting of the General Assembly of EACTS.
Members of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS):
As a reciprocal recognition between the STS and EACTS, any Active, International or Candidate member of STS wishing to become a member of EACTS may apply without providing sponsoring signatures. Their initiation fee will be waived.

The membership process
Completed applications must be received by the EACTS Secretariat no later than 30 April.
The EACTS Secretariat will collate all applications, and forward to the Membership Committee for consideration.
The membership committee will present the list of members to be elected to the Annual meeting for approval by all members.
The subscription for membership fee will be sent to new members following their election at the General Assembly.
