Course Overview
The curriculum is designed to provide all aspects of the Brussels School approach and techniques on aortic valve reconstructive surgery. Covering the anatomy of the aortic valve, echocardiographic assessment and operative planning of aortic regurgitation and aneurysm. Surgical techniques of valve sparing reimplantation, annuloplasty and cusp repair in tricuspid and bicuspid aortic valve will be detailed step-by-step and illustrated during didactic presentations, videos and live surgical cases. Indications for repair and replacement alternatives like the Ross procedure will also be illustrated and discussed in regards to long-term outcomes. On the final afternoon a hands-on wetlab session will be included to practice valve sparing reimplantation technique.
Optional, please bring your surgical loupes.
Target Audience
Adult and congenital cardio-thoracic surgeons, cardiac anaesthesiologists, cardiologists who want a deeper insight into aortic repair and Ross operation, to develop further their practice; residents and fellows who already have some background in this field.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the normal anatomy of the aortic valve and its pathomorphology in case of regurgitation and/or aorta aneurysm.
- Recognise the echocardiographic characteristics of different mechanisms of aortic regurgitation.
- Learn to expose and analyse the aortic valve and root.
- Learn to recognise the lesions and parameters responsible for valve dysfunction.
- Learn and understand the different steps of valve sparing reimplantation, annuloplasty and cusp repair techniques in tricuspid and bicuspid aortic valve.
- Learn to evaluate intraoperatively and by echocardiography immediate post-repair result.
- Discuss indications, limits and alternatives of aortic valve repair.
