Steven (Sasha) Stamenkovic is a world-renowned consultant thoracic surgeon who pioneered robotic thoracic surgery in the UK and Ireland in 2013 in Freeman hospital, Newcastle. He came to Barts in 2017 as Consultant thoracic surgeon and Director of robotic surgery and has practising privileges in other London hospitals.
He regularly teaches other surgeons throughout Europe to use the robotic platform. He leads a strong team whose aim is to use the best technology available to provide minimally-invasive operations for a whole range of chest pathology. Under his leadership of innovative practice using robotic surgery and augmented reality, Barts has the largest robotic-assisted segmentectomy series in the UK (benefitting patients with borderline breathing tests by giving them a curative cancer solution whilst preserving lung volume).
He is research lead for robotic-assisted thoracic surgery in the UK with several research projects contributing to the world literature in this field. He has been chair of the regional training committee in the North East, being in charge of cardiothoracic surgery training, and has a passion for training and teaching which he has continued at Barts by recruiting, supporting and training the best doctors, and runs an active international fellowship program.
