Giuseppe Cardillo

BIOGRAPHY

Professor Giuseppe CARDILLO, FRCS, FETCS is the chair of Thoracic Surgery at Azienda Ospedaliera San Camillo Forlanini in Rome, Italy. He is The President of the Italian Society of Thoracic Endoscopy ( SIET) ; the Chair of ERS( European Respiratory Society) Thoracic Surgery Group 08.1; the Director of EACTS ( European Association for CardioThoracic Surgery) Academy Thoracic Surgery Course 1. He is councillor of ITMIG ( International Thymic Malignancies Interest Group) and member of the “ Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee” of the IASLC , involved in Nodal Staging update . He is co-chair of The “Pneumothorax “ ERS-EACTS-ESTS joint task force, of the “GGO “ EACTS-ESTS task force, and of the ERS Benign pleural effusion task force. He has been co-chair of the ERS-EACTS -ESTS-ESTRO Malignant pleural Mesothelioma task force. He is Associate Editor of Frontiers in Oncology , and Guest Editor of Journal of Clinical Medicine ; he is also editorial board member of European Respiratory Journal (ERJ) ( IF 33.8) In the past, he has been Locum Consultant Thoracic surgeon at University Hospitals of Leicester , Glenfield Hospital , Leicester(UK)( 2007) and Fellow Thoracic Surgeon at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg (S) ( 1996). His main clinical interest is minimally invasive thoracic surgery either by VATS and by RATS ( robot Da Vinci Xi), locally advanced NSCLC , Mesothelioma, Thymoma, and tracheal surgery. He is also involved in lung cancer screening

BIOGRAPHY

Richard Milton is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon with an interest in Robotic Surgery and chest trauma. He graduated from Sheffield University in 1993, completed his cardiothoracic training in Yorkshire and was appointed to his current position at St James's University Hospital in Leeds in 2007. In addition to his clinical interests, he is involved in training and education and teaches on several national and regional trauma courses. As the current Chair of the Thoracic Domain of EACTS, he aims to continue to increase the Thoracic footprint across the Association.

BIOGRAPHY

Vincent (Wentao) Fang is the chief thoracic surgeon at the Shanghai Chest Hospital, Jiaotong University Medical School in Shanghai, China. He routinely performs open and minimally-invasive surgery including VATS and robotics for pulmonary, mediastinal and esophageal diseases. His research focuses on thoracic malignancies, including lung cancers, thymic tumors, and esophageal cancers. He is currently a Steering Committee member of the IASLC SPFC, Thoracic Domain member of the ASCVTS, Chairman of the Mediastinal Tumor committee and Vice Chairman of the Esophageal Cancer committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association.

Dean of Medical faculty of St. Petersburg State University Director of St.Petersburg State Research Institute of Phthisiopulmonology Dr. Piotr Yablonskiy is a general thoracic surgeon, he performs all operations on the lungs and mediastinal organs, including reconstructive-plastic and thoracoscopic, owns the technique of general surgical, vascular and cardiac surgical interventions. He has experience in lung transplantation, robot-assisted surgical interventions. He was the first surgeon in the Russian Federation who performed the robotic surgery on the thorax. Since then he performed more than 250 RATS in thoracic surgery on Da Vinci surgical system. He developed and performed the first RATS in patient with pulmonary TB in the world. Piotr was born in Moldova. He attended medical school at the medical University of Kishinev. Then he moved to St.Petersburg, where he had made a large breakthrough in his surgical and scientific career at the State Scientific Research Institute of Pulmonology. In 1994 he founded and leaded the St.Petersburg Center of pulmonology and thoracic surgery, which became one of the best in the Russian Federation. Since 2005 Piotr is a Chief Surgeon of St. Petersburg and since 2010 – the Chief Thoracic Surgeon of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation. Piotr is the author of more than 500 scientific papers on pulmonology, thoracic surgery and TB surgery. In addition, he is the co-author of the national guideline on respiratory diseases, author of the monograph “Mediastinoscopy and other invasive methods of N-staging of lung cancer”, co-author of the “Surgical treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Complex Pleuropulmonary Infections: European Respiratory Society Monograph”. Internationally recognized for his expertise in TB surgery, mediastinal tumors and lung cancer surgery. He is founder and President of the Russian Association of Thoracic Surgeons, also President of National Phthisiatrists Association. He is a member of the ERS, ESTS, EACTS, ISMICS and a member of WCTS Steering committee. Above all he is a founding editor of Journal Medical Alliance и St. Petersburg State University Journal of Medicine.

BIOGRAPHY

Korkut Bostanci graduated from the Istanbul University Istanbul Medical Faculty in 1994. After finishing his residency at the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Department of the same institute, he became a thoracic surgeon in 2000. Currently, he is working as a Professor at the Thoracic Surgery Department of Marmara University School of Medicine. His areas of interest are VATS procedures, chest wall surgery, and lung volume reduction. He has been a member of EACTS since 2013, and a Thoracic Domain Member since 2020.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Dörr is a thoracic surgery resident at the Essen University Hospital. He completed a fellowship at the ‘Reinhard Lab’ studying new therapeutic options for SCLC and won the 2018 research award of the German Thoracic Society. Currently he is investigating new prognostic factors for NSCLC and developing a system to predict pulmonary malignancy. Being a member of the EACTS thoracic domain and the Residents Committee, Dr. Dörr focuses on achieving synergistic effects for young thoracic surgeons, especially in education.

Tomaž Štupnik

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Tomaž Štupnik is a graduate of the University of Ljubljana. He received training in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, completing his residency in 2008. He was also trained in Texas Heart Institute under Igor Gregoric, MD Anderson Cancer Center under Ara Vaporciyan, and Reza Mehran, the Methodist Hospital, Houston TX under Harish Seethamraju and Mathias Loebe and Allgemeines Krankenhaus in Vienna under Walter Klepetko. He was the first thoracic surgeon in South-East Europe to perform a VATS Lobectomy (2008) and the first to perform Uniportal VATS Lobectomy (2015). Between 2012 and 2014, he organized 12 International VATS Lobectomy courses with wet labs and Live Surgery, hosting many established thoracic surgeons from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He performed two Worldwide Live VATS Lobectomy Video Transmissions in (2015 and 2017). He has played a significant role in spreading the VATS technique to South-East Europe by performing Live VATS Lobectomies in Poland, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Greece and organizing 2016 and 2017 South-Eastern European Joint Meetings of Thoracic Surgeons and Anesthesiologists in Split and Ljubljana respectively. He was a member of the Organizing Committee at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons held in Ljubljana. In 2018 he led the surgical team that established a very successful Lung Transplant program in Slovenia and was awarded a Levicnik prize of the Slovenian Respiratory Society for his contribution to the field. The team has performed 38 transplantations until October 2021, including pediatric pulmonary transplantation and 4 transplantations for COVID-19 associated ARDS and pulmonary fibrosis. He authored a Textbook on Thoracentesis and chest tube drainage placement (2013). He was an invited speaker and member of the faculty at many international meetings such as the 3rd International Uniportal VATS Course in Berlin, CEE Thoracic Symposiums, 1st CEE Uniportal VATS Wet-Lab in Istanbul, 1st International Course on non-intubated and advanced VATS Lobectomy technique in Guangzhou, China, ESTS VATS Lobectomy Beginner and Intermediate Course in Hamburg. He has co-authored papers with Diego Gonzalez-Rivas on advanced uniportal VATS techniques published in EJCTS and JTD (2016). Dr. Tomaž Štupnik finished his Ph.D. in Medical Statistics (2017) and was habilitated to the position of Assistant Professor at the Medical Faculty of Ljubljana. Since 2016 he has headed the Thoracic Surgery Department of University Medical Centre Ljubljana. In collaboration with Ethicon, Dr. Tomaž Štupnik developed the ‘Ethicon Stupnik VATS Simulator’ explicitly targeted to the deliberate practice of VATS skills. Since 2017 more than 200 simulators have been produced and deployed in Europe, North America, Japan, China, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. More than 3000 training opportunities were created worldwide, and practice on this simulator is currently being incorporated into standard thoracic surgical training. He is also an experienced glider pilot and instructor, former national vice-champion, and held several national gliding records.
