Reza Hosseinpour was born in Iran in 1964 but left his native country in 1978 to live in the USA, then France and then the UK where he became a British citizen. He studied medicine at the University of London: Guys’ and St Thomas’ Hospitals. His general surgical training took place between the University Hospitals of London and Cambridge. He then obtained his doctoral degree in the morphology of congenital cardiac malformations at the Royal Brompton Hospital and National Heart & Lung Institute at Imperial College, London. His specialist training in cardiac surgery started with a brief period at the University Hospital of Southampton followed by a full training programme at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. Subsequently, he sub-specialized in congenital cardiac surgery by working at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Guy’s Hospital (that unit has since moved to Evelina Children’s Hospital) and Birmingham Children’s Hospital. In 2006 he moved to Seville, Spain, to join the staff of the congenital cardiac surgery unit at the Virgen del Rocio University Hospital, which is one of the teaching hospitals of the University of Seville. He became the chief of this unit in 2010 and continues as such. He has written many scientific articles and several chapters in medical textbooks. He is also the author of the book Pathophysiology of Congenital Heart Disease from a Surgical Perspective, which was published in 2020. He has also written a non-medical book describing the history and elements of bullfighting, which he was exposed to while living in Seville.
Eva Sames-Dolzer was born in Linz, Austria, attended the medical school of the University of Vienna and lives together with her husband and their two daughters in Linz. She passed her residency in General Surgery and later on in Cardiac Surgery at the former General Hospital Linz, Austria, now Kepler University Hospital Linz. She is working as attending surgeon in the field of paediatric cardiac surgery since 2004 at the Children’s Heart Center Linz, serving as chief substitute of the institution. Her primary scientific and surgical interests lie in single ventricle palliation and treatment of borderline left ventricle patients after foetal intervention. She is also faculty member of the Johannes Kepler University, teaching cardiovascular diseases and paediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery.
