Women in cardio-thoracic surgery
Mission statement
It is our mission to guide the Association in its efforts to champion the role of women throughout the organisation, identifying opportunities and making recommendations for EACTS to create a fair, equitable, diverse and inclusive culture in which women have equal opportunities in training, research and leadership. The WiCTS Committee aims to spread awareness of gender disparity and provide assistance to women in cardiothoracic surgery through research, training and mentorship.

Interests: adult cardiac surgery, fundamental research in cardiovascular physiopathology, medical training, education. I am a cardiac surgery resident in Angers, France. I have a keen interest in adult cardiac surgery as well as fundamental research in cardiovascular physiopathology. Apart from my surgical activities, I am an active member of the French association of young cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons. In daily practice, I value the collaboration between physicians allowing us to deliver the best medical care to our patients. I am honoured to serve the WiCTS committee as well as the EACTS residents committee, working towards gender equality in our domain, and promoting residents’ education and activities.

BIOGRAPHY
Dr Miia Lehtinen is a last year resident in the cardiothoracic surgery training program of University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital. Miia completed her PhD training in 2015 in University of Helsinki: in her PhD thesis she studied the effects of bone marrow cell treatment on myocardial infarction in a randomized clinical trial. For this work, Miia received the award of the best medical thesis of the year in 2015 by the Finnish Medical Association. Between 2014 and 2018, Miia undertook a postdoctoral research period in the Karolinska Institute in Sweden studying embryonic stem cell treatment for myocardial infarction with professor Kenneth Chien. Currently, Miia's research focuses on nuclear medicine and computed tomography imaging, and the ways we can use these imaging modalities to understand the pathophysiology of ischemic heart disease, optimize surgical treatment of patients with ischemic mitral regurgitation and assess effects of pulmonary endarterectomy in chronic pulmonary hypertension.
