Nimrat Grewal
Nimrat Grewal is a cardiothoracic surgeon and associate professor at Amsterdam University Medical Centre, with clinical and academic expertise in thoracic aortic disease. She graduated cum laude in Medicine from VU University Amsterdam in 2014 and obtained her PhD in 2015 at Leiden University Medical Centre on aortopathy in patients with a bicuspid aortic valve. She completed her cardiothoracic surgery training in Leiden and holds a fellowship at the Yale Aortic Institute. Nimrat is specialised in complex aortic procedures, including root and arch repair, and the clinical management of heritable thoracic aortic disorders. Her clinical work is closely integrated with translational research on genetic risk prediction of thoracic aortopathy, vascular biology, and long-term outcomes after aortic surgery. With a strong foundation in embryology and molecular cell biology, her research aims to optimize risk stratification and personalized treatment for patients with thoracic aortic disease, with specific attention to developmental mechanisms and ethnicity-related disparities. She further leads the largest international genetic consortium on aortic dissections (GEN-TAAD). Her initiation of the IHLCN Biobank has established a vital infrastructure that supports a wide range of translational research projects and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration. She also co-founded the TRAIN Health Awareness platform, a mHealth platform which translates research into accessible lifestyle tools. Nimrat serves as an expert in the European Reference Network for Rare Vascular Diseases (VASCERN), with a particular focus on genetic aortopathies.
