Benjamin O’Brien

Benjamin O’Brien is the Director of the Departments of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the German Heart Centre Berlin and at Charité University Medicine, where he also is the Chair of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine.

From 2013 to 2020, he was the Clinical Director for Perioperative Medicine at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Barts Heart Centre. He was part of the clinical leadership team that delivered the Barts Heart Centre merger project, bringing together three previously independent cardiovascular hospitals. From 2018 until 2020 he was also the Deputy Director of the Barts Heart Centre.

He took up his positions in Berlin in November 2020.

Ben completed his undergraduate medical studies in Freiburg, San Francisco, Innsbruck and Berlin and his specialist training in Anesthesiology and in Intensive Care Medicine in London and Sydney.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, and the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. He obtained his Doctorate in 2001, a Master of Health Business Management (MHBA) in 2012 and his ‘Habilitation’ in 2013.
