Stephen Rooney

Stephen Rooney is a consultant cardiac surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. He qualified from Nottingham University and undertook his general surgical training in Nottingham and Sheffield before completing specialist training in cardiothoracic surgery in Cardiff and the West Midlands. He established the programme for surgery for carcinoid heart valve disease in his department over 15 years ago and his other clinical interests include surgery for renal tumours with cavo-atrial extension, cardiopulmonary transplantation and mechanical support. In the West Midlands he has been Training Programme Director and Chair of the Training Committee. He has also sat on the Specialty Advisory Committee for cardiothoracic surgical training and been Co-lead for National Selection. He is currently an examiner for the FRCS C-Th and the FEBCTS (the European Board specialist examination).
