Vibeke Hjortdal

Vibeke E. Hjortdal graduated as medical doctor from Aarhus University, Denmark in 1988 and she defended her DMSc and PhD in 1992 and 1993 respectively. In 2000-2001 she worked as senior registrar at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. In 2001 Vibeke E. Hjortdal graduated as cardiothoracic surgeon and in 2004 she became professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Aarhus University Hospital. In 2007 she became the lead of congenital heart surgery. Vibeke E. Hjortdal has a special interest in congenital heart surgery in LMIC and she has been affiliated with the NGO, Chain of Hope for many years. Research wise, Vibeke E. Hjortdal has published more than 400 peer reviewed papers in international journals and she has supervised over 50 PhD students. Her main focus areas are long term outcome for patients with congenital heart defects including neurodevelopmental outcome and the lymphatic complications seen in relation to congenital heart diseases. In 2013 Vibeke Hjortdal was knighted by the Danish Queen. Since 2019, Vibeke Hjortdal has hold a position as professor of congenital heart surgery at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen University Hospital.
