In Memory of Keyvan Moghissi
It is with a very heavy heart that we learn of the passing of Professor Keyvan Moghissi.
One of the Founding Fathers and second President of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS), we are grateful for Professor Moghissi’s dedication to advancing our organisation. Professor Moghissi undertook the task of writing our first Constitution and was integral to the development of the EACTS.
Professor Moghissi qualified as a surgeon in Geneva, Switzerland. He later moved to the UK and gained experience both in cardiac and thoracic surgery in several well-known units. As a consultant, Professor Moghissi chose to specialise in general thoracic surgery, and moved to Hull to set up the Cardiothoracic Surgical Department at Castle Hill Hospital in the 1970s. He was internationally active, helping to found the Thoracic Surgeons’ Club in 1979 as well as the Societas Europeana Pneumologica (SEP).
As well as pursuing an active career in cardiothoracic surgery, he became internationally renowned for his work in laser treatments, especially PDT. To further this, he was responsible for founding a charity with a working arm – the Yorkshire Laser Centre – to undertake ground-breaking research into laser therapy.
He will be missed by his previous colleagues and the numerous patients he helped in his long and distinguished career.
