Editor’s Choice: Valve sparing versus valve replacement in root aneurysms
This month’s episode features Prof. Klautz and Dr. Arabkhani, the first authors of a recent Editor’s Choice article published in EJCTS entitled ‘A multicentre, propensity score matched analysis comparing a valve-sparing approach to valve replacement in aortic root aneurysm: Insight from the AVIATOR database’. Professor Klautz attended medical school at Leiden University, where he also did his PhD research combined with a research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. He was trained as a cardiothoracic surgeon at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam. Since 2002 he has worked as a CT surgeon at Leiden UMC, where he became professor and chair of the department in 2008. In 2019 he was also appointed chair of the department of CT surgery at Amsterdam UMC.
Dr Arabkhani studied medicine at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam and parallel to his study he obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology. After obtaining his PhD he started his residency at Leiden University Medical Center, where he is currently working, and he completed his training with a fellowship in “aortic root surgery” at the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc hospital in Brussels.
